Description

The Advisory Committee for Women at Justice will be holding three Women’s Self-Defence Virtual Workshops in recognition of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence campaign. This annual, international campaign started in 1991 to call out and speak up on gender-based violence, and to renew our commitment to ending violence against women and girls. The self-defence workshops will be facilitated by Wen-Do Women’s Self-Defense (https://wendo.ca). During the workshops, instructors will facilitate discussions that involve the breaking down and debunking of victim-blaming stereotypes and myths that surround women’s self-defence. By offering factual and resource-rich discussions about abuse, harassment, and assault within a patriarchal society, women will have the opportunity to learn and practice physical and verbal self-protection skills and strategies that cover a range of dangerous and/or uncomfortable situations.

What to expect:

 • Physical techniques will be presented online with the understanding that some women may be sitting or sometimes standing at their computer

• Participants are encouraged to do only what is emotionally comfortable and physically safe for their bodies.

• This session will be held virtually. You are welcome to participate from either your worksite locations, or your telework office.

• Participants are expected to respect each other’s privacy and confidentiality while class is in session. As such, each participant must be alone in a room with a door that will close, and is encouraged to is encouraged to be on camera and to use headphones.

By the end of this learning activity, participants will be able to:

 • Know and practice physical and verbal self-protection skills and strategies that cover a range of dangerous and/or uncomfortable situations.

• Better understand and break down the victim-blaming stereotypes and myths that surround women’s self-defence.
