Step 4 - Check out Other Resources
- The Justice Managers’ Community Network (JMCN) supports JUS managers and supervisors by providing resources and events to address their needs. Take a moment to explore the Key Resources for New Managers and Supervisors page.
- The National Managers Community (NMC) organizes regular events aimed to support public-service managers. They offer Peer Coaching Circles, which is a collaborative process where individuals support each other in developing skills, solving problems, and achieving goals through open-ended questions and practical, action-oriented discussions. Contact the NMC if you are interested in joining a Peer Coaching Circle.
- New Managers are encouraged to seek a mentor via the National Mentoring Program. This program aims, among other things, to develop the leaders of today and the leaders of tomorrow by building on their strengths and developing their leadership skills.
- The 360° feedback instruments and services ($) consist of a structured process whereby managers interested in development compare a self-assessment of their leadership competencies with the way they are viewed by other significant persons, such as their superiors, peers, staff, clients, etc. If you would like to initiate a 360 feedback exercise, please contact the Centre of Expertise for Learning and Professional Development who will coordinate with the Public Service Commission.
- Various functional areas such as Communications, Finance, Policy, IM/IT and many more have their respective government-wide community. With each of them offering resources specific to their members, be sure to check out the list of existing communities.
- Aspiring executives may wish to refer to the Key Leadership Competencies as a tool to identify their learning and development needs and to inform career planning. You can refer to the examples of effective and ineffective behaviours.
