Description
In legislative texts, we sometimes have to make reference to other provisions or texts. French has a wide range of expressions and set phrases to do this. This course looks at the different ways we write cross-references, the nuances between them and things we should avoid when we are considering using them.
Learning Objectives / Topics covered
By the end of this training, learners will be able to:
- explain how cross-references are useful (avoiding repetition, making connections and allowing us to be more clear and concise)
- recognize and avoid pitfalls (such as circular references, cross-references to the previous provision, cross-references that do not refer to anything and “cascading” cross-references)
- use cross-referencing techniques: French participle and adjective expressions (“prévu à”, “prévu par”, “visé à” and “visé par”, other options and the case of “décrit”)
- use cross-referencing techniques: prepositions and prepositional phrases (various options, linking verbs and exceptions)
- use cross-referencing techniques: adaptation
