Description

AI is changing how lawyers research, draft, and advise, while creating new questions about accuracy, confidentiality, and accountability. For government lawyers, who may have among the slimmest margins for error, the stakes are especially high. Their work can affect individual rights, public resources, and trust in government. A convincing but inaccurate answer, an inappropriate disclosure, or a failure of supervision can have consequences well beyond a single file.

This interactive session puts those challenges into realistic scenarios drawn from government legal practice. Working in small groups, you’ll consider what requires independent verification, how to protect privileged and confidential information, when disclosure and candor become concerns, and what effective supervision of AI-assisted work should involve. You’ll draw on best practices, relevant data and research, and legal and ethical principles to weigh competing considerations, challenge assumptions, and make the case for your approach.

Facilitated by Abdi Aidid, whose work focuses on law and artificial intelligence, the 90-minute session runs in two 45-minute segments. Expect substantive discussion, difficult decisions, and opportunities to compare approaches with colleagues. You’ll leave with practical questions to ask before using AI, clearer ways to evaluate its outputs, and approaches to supervision and verification you can apply in your own work.

This course is bilingual, with simultaneous interpretation available in both official languages.

• Assess AI-generated outputs and identify when independent verification is required in government legal practice.
• Apply strategies to protect privileged, confidential, and sensitive information when using AI tools.
• Analyze ethical and professional responsibilities related to disclosure, accuracy, accountability, and candor in AI-assisted legal work.
• Evaluate approaches to supervising and reviewing AI-assisted legal tasks to reduce risk and support sound decision-making.
