Description
This interactive session presents practical tools and approaches to help litigation teams plan, manage, and execute files more effectively. Using real-world examples and hands-on demonstrations, participants will explore how to structure their work, forecast demands, and leverage digital tools to support efficient, collaborative practice.
Participants will:
- Examine an NLS Early Case Assessment approach to quickly understand file scope, risks, and strategy.
- Explore work planning concepts, including the “Iron Triangle” (scope–time–cost) and its application to litigation.
- See a practical demo of MS Teams, Planner, and Otto to support collaboration, task management, and knowledge capture.
- Learn how to map a critical path for major steps and dependencies in complex files.
- Discuss forecasting techniques, including how NLS tools can support resourcing and workload projections.
- Consider the role of a Project Manager and what holistic legal project management (LPM) looks like in practice, including effective delegation.
- Review efficiency best practices, with a focus on building and using communication plans to keep teams and clients aligned.
By the end of the course, participants will have concrete strategies and tools they can apply immediately to better plan their files, manage resources, and support consistent, high-quality legal services
Learning Objectives / Topics covered
- Apply an NLS Early Case Assessment approach to a new litigation file to identify scope, key risks, and an initial strategy within a defined timeframe.
- Develop a basic work plan for a litigation file that explicitly balances the “Iron Triangle” (scope, time, and cost) and articulates trade-offs for the litigation team and clients.
- Use MS Teams, Planner, and Otto in an integrated way to structure team workspaces, assign and track tasks, and capture key knowledge and decisions for an active file.
- Map the critical path for a complex litigation file, including major milestones, dependencies, and deadlines, and use this map to anticipate bottlenecks and timing risks.
- Apply simple forecasting techniques (e.g., task estimates, resource loading) to anticipate resourcing needs and workload over the life cycle of a file, using NLS tools where appropriate.
- Describe the role and value of a Project Manager in litigation and identify at least three legal project management practices (including delegation approaches) that can be incorporated into their own files.
- Design a concise communication plan for a litigation team that clarifies who needs what information, when, and in what format, to maintain alignment with colleagues and clients.
- Identify at least three efficiency best practices they can implement immediately on their own files to improve consistency, predictability, and quality of legal services.
