Description

This virtual forum will bring together participants from within and outside the Government of Canada to deepen understanding of the impacts of the school to prison pipeline affecting Black youth in Canada, and suggested strategies to disrupt that impact. The forum will examine how systemic and institutional practices across education, child welfare, health, and social services contribute to early and disproportionate criminal justice system involvement.

The discussion supports Canada’s Black Justice Strategy and builds on the work of the external Steering Group Report, A Roadmap for Transformative Change. The forum will feature presentations by two leading Canadian scholars, based on their think-piece policy papers, followed by guided discussion on policy implications, data gaps, and next steps.

What to Expect

  • A cross sectoral discussion on systemic drivers and solutions
  • Exploration of preventive, coordinated, and equality focused approaches
  • Opportunities to reflect on the need for policy reform and long term solutions for Black youth, and to reduce systems costs by more effectively targeted early interventions
