This course is intended for those interested in the drafting of legislative texts in French. Jurilinguists and legistic revisors are encouraged to take this course as well.

Participants will learn the fundamental elements of drafting of Canadian federal legislative texts in French. The learning will be reinforced by practical drafting exercises, group discussion and examples drawn from the existing legislative corpus.

This course addresses the application of the principles of legislative drafting to the French version of Canadian federal legislative texts. • The legislative drafting context and role of legislative counsel (part 1)
• Information mining & Organization of legislative texts (part 2)
• The statement of the rule of law (basic concepts: legislative function and legislative stylistics; organization of ideas, structure of provision and legislative syntax) (Parts 3 and 4)
• Definitions, cross-references, and formalities of legislative texts & practical cases (parts 5 and 6)
