Description
Please note that this course is open to Justice Canada legal professionals only (lawyers, notaries who are members of the Chambre des notaires du Québec and paralegals).
In Our Opinion is designed to help the Department of Justice (Department) provide clear, effective, efficient, consistent and high quality legal advice to the Government of Canada. While the Department’s responsibilities include a range of legal advisory, litigation and legislative services, this document aims to focus on the provision of legal advice. In particular, In Our Opinion is designed to encourage dialogue, offer guidance and suggestions on the drafting of legal advice, and list helpful resources, essential tools, practice tips and templates that facilitate the delivery of legal advice and ensure its consistency within the Department.
This course will cover the complex and unique nature of our work as legal professionals and as public servants, which includes the importance of speaking with one voice, the bilingual and bijural legal framework, as well as transparency and accountability. It also covers principles of Open by Default and Open Government. The course also includes a practical section which incorportes what you need to take into account when developing and providing legal advice, when to brief your manager, and offers some examples of tips, best practices and tools to help guide your work.
