To mark the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, Justice Canada organized a discussion featuring the heads of Muslim and Jewish law student associations - and a facilitator - from the University of Ottawa, who drafted a joint statement (note: this document is made available in the course material) on the need for sensitivity in troubled times. The discussion sought to give an opportunity for Justice employees to hear about the importance of fostering respectful dialogue between diverse communities following the events in October 2023 in the Middle East.
The students spoke about:
- the circumstances that brought them together;
- how they were able to come together in the face of divisions within a larger context of hateful rhetoric and even violence;
- their experiences in leading this initiative.

In doing so, we can contribute to a safe and healthy work environment – one that promotes engagement, openness and transparency.
Topics covered:
- Values and Ethics : Respect for People
- Treating every person with respect and fairness and valuing diversity
- Working together in a spirit of openness, honesty and transparency that encourages engagement, collaboration and respectful communication
