To mark the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, Justice Canada is organizing a discussion featuring the heads of Muslim and Jewish law student associations and a facilitator from the University of Ottawa. These students drafted a statement on the need for sensitivity in troubled times that was published in the Ottawa Citizen on October 14, 2023. The panel seeks to give an opportunity for Justice employees to hear about the importance of fostering respectful dialogue between diverse communities following the events in October 2023 in the Middle East.

The students will speak about:

  • the circumstances that brought them together;
  • how they were able to come together in the face of divisions within a larger context of hateful rhetoric and even violence;
  • their experiences in leading this initiative.

Topics covered:

  • Values and Ethics : Respect for People
  • Treating every person with respect and fairness and valuing diversity
  • Working together in a spirit of openness, honesty and transparency that encourages engagement, collaboration and respectful communication.
