This proposed one-and-a-half-hour education session for Justice Canada will provide attendees with a psychological understanding of bias, with a focus on factors that impact our beliefs, and as a result our emotional reactions to people and the behavioral choices we make to engage with them. Bias (conscious or not) is held by diverse groups of people; about themselves and those around them. And yet despite the commonality of this type of thinking, the stigma of identifying it carries great weight and so often are not addressed. The lack of mindfulness to our own thought processes and factors that influence it, can and does have significant impact on our ability to remain impartial, despite good intentions of remaining “colour blind”. A lack of mindfulness on our thinking, and factors that influence it create a high risk of racism and discrimination in our work with diverse people and communities, often further perpetuating marginalization experienced by racialized and non-dominant cultural communities.
