Description
Law practice management – managing a law practice – is often defined by law societies as a set of practical tools to assist legal professionals in assessing, maintaining and enhancing their quality of service. They provide a general framework for conducting various aspects of legal work. This course focuses on twenty-one (21) practice management guidelines described as laws of practice, to help streamline the work of legal professionals at the Department of Justice Canada (Justice) according to a set routine or sound practice established by the Legal Practices Policy Division and leading legal professionals at Justice. Inspired from the management best-selling book “The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership,” this course aims to provide the leading 21 best practices for career and profile management as a legal professional at Justice.
Topics Covered:
- Improve their ability to carry out straightforward files (low to medium complexity or risk level) independently and effectively with minimal supervision.
- Better apply applicable policies, directives, standards, guidelines, and procedures (e.g., Civil Litigation Deskbook) at Justice.
- Better comply with business practices at Justice (e.g., information and document management, access to information, privacy, security, timekeeping protocols).
- Enhance their capacity to use technological tools and resources that support departmental work.
- Work more effectively under pressure.
- Better monitor the quality and timeliness of their work.
- Ensure that they honour their commitments.
- Better manage files in an organized and professional manner.
- Better identify colleagues and others with whom to collaborate including reaching out to expertise within and outside the department.
- Listen and learn from the testimonies of experienced lawyers sharing their practical tips on their best practices for career and profile management.
