Description

We all have different styles of communicating with others, which reflects our experiences, our past, our beliefs, the context in which we are, etc. It is important to be aware of our own "default" style since it is a way to help us maximize the effectiveness of our communications with others. By improving our self-awareness and adapting to different styles, we increase our interpersonal effectiveness at work and build on our strengths while recognizing and responding appropriately to the unique styles of others.

To simulate a classroom experience, this course is centred around participant engagement and group work. To ensure that facilitators can organize breakout rooms with the correct number of participants and the group can fully benefit from these activities, we ask that you create space in your schedule to remain present for the entire session. If you need to step away from the session briefly, please advise the training facilitator at the beginning of the session.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this learning activity, participants will be able to:

  • List the four types of communication styles and their characteristics;
  • Recognize the strengths and challenges of each communication style;
  • Identify links between communication styles and leadership;
  • Define their own personal communication style;
  • Identify ways to be supportive of other styles; and
  • Demonstrate adaptability to those with different styles.
