This workshop has been designed to provide Justice employees with the essential skills producing effective briefing notes. Through a combination of entertaining lectures, lively group discussions, and practical exercises, participants will be provided an overview of the briefing note style and format with department-specific rules and templates. Participants will learn about current writing techniques and tools and be guided through an effective process to improve key writing skills.
Recommended for:
- Executive assistants
- Project officers and managers
- Those responsible for summarizing issues, actions and status for concise communication to superiors
- Federal public servants who must provide succinct summaries of projects, programs or specificissues to executives, such as cabinet ministers and deputy ministers
Whether you have never written a briefing note, or are a seasoned veteran, you will leave this course with new and valuable information.
Note: Participants are encouraged to bring samples of their own documents to the class for discussion and application of the course principles.
Learning objectives:
Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Apply a process specifically designed for writing briefing notes
- Get to the point of the issue or action
- Provide the appropriate level of detail, based on the reader's need to know
- Use summarizing short-cuts to save time and effort
- Write effective and strategic recommendations
- Stay focused on the reader's priorities
- Determine when to quote from sources verbatim and when to paraphrase
- Identify and correct grammar errors
